PELVIC PHYSIOTHERAPY

The pelvic floor can be imagined as a “bowl” of muscles in the bottom of your pelvis. We all sit and move on these muscles every single day. The pelvis is the centre of your body, its where we balance, sit, derive pleasure, grow our babies. SO what does your pelvic floor do??

It provides:

  • Continence – they are the reason we do not leak urine, gas or stool.
  • Support – they hold up our pelvic organs including our bladder, uterus and rectum.
  • Core – move over abs! These key muscles are the foundation of your core, which supports your overall strength, balance and function.
  • Enjoyable sex – they are the reason we can participate in pleasure, become aroused and achieve orgasm.
  • Circulation – these muscles create a pumping action that assists blood and lymphatic drainage helping to keep our tissue fluids in balance.

Do you experience poor bladder and/or bowel control?
Do you feel a heavy sensation or felt a tissue at the opening of your vagina?
Do you experience painful sex or have difficulty enjoying sex?
Do you experience pain within your pelvis at rest or with daily activities?
Do you think your core strength is weak making exercise and daily activities challenging or tiring?
Do you see your belly tent or protrude with crunches and planks?
Does it feel like your abs never returned to normal after your pregnancy?
Have you been pregnant or had urological/gynecological surgery?
Are you dealing with side effects of breast or pelvic cancer treatment?

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy can help you REGAIN continence, support, core, enjoyable sex and circulation through stretching, strengthening, manual therapy, education, mindfulness, behavioural strategies and home rehabilitation.

PRENATAL & POSTPARTUM CARE

During pregnancy our bodies go through huge changes, and for some women its when problems with posture, pain, and leaking begin.  Changes affecting the pregnant woman significantly affect the state of the pelvic floor muscles, which contribute to pain during pregnancy and labour. The muscles must also be able to relax, allowing your baby to enter the world.

We can help…

Low back pain, hip pain, pubic symphysis pain, sacroiliac joint pain
Diastasis Recti – Mummy Tummy / abdominal separation
Preparing for delivery and recovery
Incontinence – even small leaks 🙂
Posture correction and prevention of future problems
C-section recovery
Smart and safe exercise during pregnancy and after birth

Even if you are feeling great during your pregnancy, come see us to learn how to carry, birth, and recover with knowledge and power.

See us after to detect problems early and help your body optimally recover while caring for your babe.

MASSAGE FOR PREGNANCY, BIRTH PREPARATION & BEYOND

Pregnancy Massage Therapy

Massage therapy during the prenatal period is an incredible complement and support during a profound, and often overwhelming time of transition physically and mentally. It enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation and relieves mental and physical fatigue. The gentle, noninvasive approach of massage can ease discomfort associated with pregnancy, help the patient prepare for labor and give her nurturing emotional support.
It is a privilege for me to be a part of your pregnancy journey. Prenatal massage treatments can be done on your stomach and or back in the first trimester and in a side-lying or the semi-reclining position as you transition into the second and third trimester.

Some common pregnancy related complaints that can be alleviated by massage are:

  • Reduced stress and increased relaxation
  • Relief of muscular tension and spasms (in particular in the hips, legs, back and neck)
  • Reduction of stress on weight-bearing joints
  • Assistance in pain relief for any sciatic pain that may arise during pregnancy
  • Reduced swelling in hands and feet
  • May reduce frequency and duration of headaches, backache, and muscle strain
  • Improved energy levels and reduced fatigue
  • Maintenance/awareness of good posture
  • Sore feet
  • Round ligament pain
  • Peripheral neuropathies (thoracic outlet syndrome, carpal tunnel, sciatica)
  • And more!

We also collaborate with the clinic’s pelvic physiotherapists on an ongoing basis

Postpartum Massage Therapy

The postpartum period is typically thought of as the period that immediately follows birth. In the first 6 weeks there are many adjustments including physical, emotional and psychological and can all be aided by massage therapy. The pelvic floor and associated structures (back, abdomen, hips, inner thigh etc.) have gone through extensive changes during 9 months of pregnancy and birth. Postpartum massage is safe as soon after birth as Mom feels comfortable to come in for treatment, and can benefit you whether you have had a vaginal or cesarean birth. You are welcome to inquire about bringing your baby to your session to ensure you get your selfcare time in or book back to back sessions for both of you! Please inquire when booking.

Breast Massage

Breast health is too often ignored until after a problem arises. It’s an area of the body with powerful associations that sometimes makes women hesitant to seek care, despite the fact that the vast majority of them experience breast discomfort at some point. Whether it’s breast congestion, discomforts from lactation and breastfeeding, abnormalities such as lumps or cysts, or surgical procedures, any breast problem can create heightened anxiety and stress that can diminish overall health. Receiving breast massage can be a wonderful way to support healthier breasts and healing.

Therapeutic breast massage can result in:

  • Increased circulation of blood and lymph
  • Reduced congestion in breast tissue
  • Relief from mastalgia (breast pain)
  • Improved posture
  • Restored range of motion in the upper body

These physical improvements may provide huge psychological and emotional benefits, especially for those recovering from breast disease and the aftermath of invasive treatments and changes resulting from lactation and breastfeeding.

Infant Massage Therapy

Infants need massage too! Most people are unaware that their little ones benefit in a variety of ways and are covered under the extended health plans of their parents. Some of the benefits of massaging your baby are:

Helps relieve discomfort from gas, colic, and constipation
Improves blood circulation
Aids in digestion
Improves immune function
Enhanced development of the nervous system
Increases alertness/heightened awareness
Reduces stress hormones and increases relaxation (possibly aiding in sleep)
Enhances communication between parent and baby and deepens bonding

Private instruction and group classes are available for parents to learn infant massage. We also offer individual massage therapy sessions for baby.

MINDFULNESS & WELLNESS SUPPORT

Mindfulness is a way of paying attention to whatever is happening in our lives, inside and out, in the present moment. When we connect with the present, we become aware of habitual patterns of thought, emotion and behaviour.

Mindfulness is not a religion—anyone, with any belief system, can enjoy its benefits, many of which are based in research.

Benefits of Mindfulness:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Reduce the suffering associated with pain
  • Improves mood and working memory
  • Supports relapse prevention of depression
  • Increases emotional intelligence
  • Develops awareness and resilience
